Architecture Highlight: Bengali Temple Architecture
Monidipa Bose Dey, an insightful Indian writer, just dropped another fantastic article, this one on Bengali Hindu Temple architecture from what she terms the “early Hindu period” (until 1200CE, before the Islamic invasions of Bengal).

She notes the temple architecture of ancient Bengal can be divided into four basic types:
The Bhadra, pida, or tiered type, in which the roof over the sanctum consists of a series of gradually receding tiered stages crowned by the usual finials including the amalaka;
Rekha or sikhara type with a curvilinear tower and usual crowning elements;
tiered type surmounted by a stupa; and
tiered type surmounted by a sikhara.
