Welcome to Eternal Path! This week we feature: The Turtle, anti-Brahmin sentiments , and an aesthetic!
Resource Highlight: The Turtle
We’ve highlighted writing by the eloquent and insightful Dr. Indu Viswanathan many a time over the past 5 years. She is one of the best speakers on the diaspora Hindu experience in the United States and amongst the Western diaspora. We most recently highlighted her academic paper on Hinduphobia in Issue 284.
She and frequent collaborator Sneha Rao recently launched a new publication on Substack called “The Turtle”. In their original post - they talk about the goal of the publication, which is to imagine the future of the Hindu experience. Many publications on Hinduism spend too much time focused on the far past or on contemporary political discussions, and this future-oriented perspective, especially in the diaspora, is sorely needed. We recommend checking out their original post and subscribing at this link or the embed below.
Hinduphobia Highlight: The Roots of Brahmin Hatred
Hindus of all castes matter. Full stop.
However Hinduphobes have often used Brahmins as a stand-in for Hindus, ascribing evils to the boogeyman of “Brahminism”, ascribing positive things to “Brahminism” (as an entity separate from Hinduism), and sometimes taking “Jew” out of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories and substituting the term “Brahmin”. Upword has a great video tracing these sentiments in modern Indian politics below:
