Initiative Highlight: Hindu on Campus
“Hindu On Campus” is a new initiative spearheaded by community members concerned about rising bigotry towards Hindus on academic campuses, often cheered on by bigoted academics. They recently created a great thread exposing Hinduphobic bigot and Rutgers Professor Audrey Truschke (single-page available here), and followed up with a well-produced video outlining the matter (see below).
Additionally, they spearheaded an open letter to Rutgers University asking them to take a stand on whether they approve of Truschke’s defense of genocidal ruler Aurangzeb or her bigoted comments towards Hindus and Hindu deities. As of the time of writing it was at over 5,000 signatures, prompting what unfortunately was a milquetoast answer from the university. Hindu On Campus’ response to the Rutgers statement is available on twitter here, and in single-page form here. Continued community pressure resulted in the following statement from Rutgers on March 12th, one that was far more generous to the Hindu community.
This showed that community mobilization, especially when done in a focused and articulate manner, can garner attention, and we are hopeful that many of the signatories and the broader Hindu community are inspired to continue advocating for our interests.
Make sure to follow Hindu On Campus on Twitter @HinduOnCampus, on Instagram @HinduOnCampus, and check out their Carrd website for more resources, including a form to report instances of Hinduphobia on campus for data collection.
