Military Highlight: Cham Rebellion
Most of our readers in America will be familiar with the Vietnam War, in which the American government assisted the South Vietnamese government against the alliance of the North Vietnamese government and Viet Cong rebels, who ultimately prevailed in this prolonged and bloody conflict. The Cham are an ethnicity in Vietnam (who we certainly will feature in future issues) that used to rule the area in the Middle Ages, prior to the arrival of the Kinh (aka Vietnamese) out of Southern China, and to this day largely practice either Hinduism or Islam. During the Vietnam War and in the early years after it, the Cham ethnicity of Vietnam rebelled against the Vietamese government, desiring independence. One of our readers alerted us to this interesting historical highlight, of Cham commanders Jaya Marang and Po Dharma, who drew strength for their struggle from seeing the great Cham temples of Central Vietnam. Unfortunately today, the Cham are heavily discriminated against in Vietnam, and Hinduism is not even recognized as a religion there, despite the Cham having a longer claim to living in Vietnam than the majority Kinh ethnicity, and a long history of Hinduism in Vietnam spanning millennia.
